Curl up with a Book.

I’m a person that wears her emotions on her  sleeves, pretty much all the time and uncontrollably. The best way to really hit those emotions is through reading a good tear-jerker of a book.

Way back in the sweet summertime I picked a random book up when Borders was still a chain and thought it was going to be some cheesy book, but I picked up Angela Morrison’s Sing me to Sleep and had one of the best book cries I’ve ever had.

The book starts off with the terrible high school scenario, ugly girl with a beautiful voice. Beth, the female lead, gets accepted to an extremely important girls choir and becomes a soloist. As a soloist one of the mothers decides to tame the beast to look a little more like she sounds.

Now onto the actual interesting part, while singing she in a competition in Canada one of the guys from the Amabile all boys choir falls head over heels for her. He falls for her because of a clip of her singing on her show choir’s website. When he meets her of course he looks past her looks and falls for her personality. Yet, there’s a catch Derek (the boy who falls for her) has some issues that are huge obstacles in their path. Also, as if dealing with the Derek isn’t enough her best friend from home confesses he’s had feelings for her for a while.

It doesn’t sound like a tear starter, but if I told you anymore it would spoil the beautiful surprises the book holds. Take my advice, grab a box of tissues and try this book out.  It will be worth it!

Aca-scuse me!

If you haven’t watched Pitch Perfect yet, please go run to target or download it OnDemand pronto.

As far as college romantic comedies go Anna Kendrick hit the holy grail in the Acapella love story. The music may be fantastic, if you skip over hearing Ace of Base’s ” I Saw the Sign”  three times, but the storyline is even better. It is a tad predictable that the guy will get the girl, but the execution is funny and charming. The main guy
Jesse, played by the new guy Skylar Austin, is the perfect prince charming that can really sing.

Anna Kendrick’s Beca meets Jesse and at first thinks he is just some nerd that she doesn’t have time for, and yet the rumors fly that she has a “musical toner” for him. The writing is fantastic, quotable and kept me laughing the entire time. The ending is up there with some of my favorites because of it’s surprise value. Like I said, you know the girl is going to end up with the guy, but you don’t expect the non-emotional girl to pull off something so cute like her final song in the competition.

The coolest part is they can pull off both the competition and getting the guy. Well if you read this without watching the movie, it may be a little aca-awkward. Check it out, sing along, then go watch the Breakfast Club. You’ll get it after you watch it.

Merry Christmas Baby!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a great night!

I hope that Santa was very good to everyone this magical day, there is just nothing better than Christmas Eve and Christmas day. I know I’m going to be enjoying a fantastic feast that my mother has been slaving over all day! I even put on a new outfit that I got for Christmas.

There is one song that I have to listen to on Christmas is “All I Want for Christmas is You” but my all new favorite version is when Michael Bublé belts it out. I almost positive this love/ Christmas song speaks for itself, all I want for Christmas is you!

I don’t want a lot for Christmas, there is just one thing I need. I don’t care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree. I just want you for my own more than you will ever know. Make my wish come true, Baby all I want for Christmas is you.

Just listen to the sweet, sweet lyrics while Michael Bublé melts your heart. Michael, I would love to be under your Christmas tree!

Now everyone go enjoy the lights on the tree, open up any last-minute presents, and stuff your faces with lots of Christmas treats!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a great night!

Penny Lane

Recently, at a family party I heard my least favorite phrase in the human language, ” So any boyfriends yet?”

Although the phrase is completely normal, and a great question to ask a college female, it just doesn’t get me excited when I get to answer, no not yet with the biggest smile I can muster. The whole ordeal reminded me of a book I read a little while back and reread over the summer when I was working as a waitress. I was singing along to Elizabeth Eulberg’s Lonely Hearts Club.

The premise is that a high school girl is tired of boys breaking her friends hearts so she decides to start a club called Penny Lane’s Lonely Heart Club. The book has heavy Beatles references as her parents are portrayed as  Beatles obsessed fans who named their children after songs and made sure that was all they listened to growing up. That’s probably the neatest part of the book, how it brings a classic like the Beatles and shows how it applies to everyone.

In typical chick lit fashion, as soon as the club really starts to take off and builds a following Penny meets a boy that really likes her and she may like him back. Now, here’s the dilemma how can the girl who started a club about being lonely for high school decide to be lonely no more? Basic girl problems right?

So as Penny figures out how to balance the club and going on her first date you see the adorable side of a high schoolers mind, and lets face it when it comes to dating not much changes in college. We still over think things and worry about all the wrong things. It’s a good read for anyone who thought they were heartbroken in high school.

Well happy reading over this nice Christmas break, and have a Merry Christmas Eve, Eve!

Dancing the Night Away.

Sometimes there comes along a song that you just can’t get help but belt out at the top of your lungs. Today driving in the car,  I put on my Sirius radio and Lady Antebellum’s “Dancing Away With My Heart” started to play and I couldn’t help but break it down at a traffic light.

I haven’t seen you in ages
Sometimes I find myself wondering where you are
For me you’ll always be eighteen and beautiful
And dancing away with my heart

This song has such a precious melody that just runs away with your heart, at the risk of being corny it really does. It talks about that lost love that you always seem to think about, even if you don’t want to. When you catch yourself off guard thinking about someone you aren’t supposed to and you think of them in a way that makes them untouchable, like 18 and perfect.

A memory can take you away and that’s what this song does, it jogs that place in your head that is much happier and simpler. People change, but memories if they are kept in a nice plastic container called your brain, stay exactly the same. You can’t change the past, but you can enjoy the little moments like dancing with someone when you were 18 long after they’ve actually happened.

Even if you don’t enjoy country, the odds are you will enjoy this song. So check out a beautiful ballad about young love.

We’re getting to the thick of it, only 5 days left until Christmas!

Whose coming to town?

As the Holidays stumble upon us I get to partake in my favorite holiday television tradition, watching the classic old hour Christmas specials. The classics just really make the season bright. You know the great classics voiced by Fred Astaire, with the puppet-quality like Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

The holiday season has this huge link to love because in the movie the children are in love with this stranger who brings them toys to brighten their days, and good old Chris Kringle is in love with Jessica which is one of the best holiday love stories ever told. It’s how Santa got his Mrs. Claus. It’s amazing how in these old holiday tales they tell more of a story in an hour than most full length movies do in two. Jessica get’s a little china doll and realizes the child in her and falls in love in a very short time, but you don’t feel ripped off you just feel more in love with the holiday season.

Put one foot in front of the other, and soon you’ll be walking out the door. Such a great take-away message about growing up and being happy. If you put one foot in front of the other you can do almost anything you please, like being happy or getting everything on your list done. You have to start somewhere.

So grab a cup of hot cocoa and maybe your own little elves and watch how the little nuances of Christmas came to life. A good little Kringle never hurt anybody.

Happy Holidays! One Week until Santa really comes to town!

Sick day!

Leave it to me to come home and wake up feeling super sick, we are leaning towards the flu or a cold. This sickness couldn’t happen at a worse time considering all of the unpacking and Christmas shopping I have left to do.

So in celebration of how terrible I felt today I’m going to post about a song that both explains how I’m feeling and is adorable, Maroon 5’s “Never Gonna Leave This Bed”.

You push me, I don’t have the strength to resist or control you. Take me down, take me down.

To start off Adam Levine is gorgeous and if he doesn’t have the strength to resist or control you, you must have a major pull on him. It’s a really cute song about how he was in love with his then model girlfriend who is featured in the video. I love how he says, “take it, take it all take all the I have I’d give it all away just to get you back.”  That is one of the cutest declaration of love, we all want someone who will give everything up to be with us. Except, we never want them to actually have to do it.

So while I’m sitting in bed, working on keeping my head up you should watch the music video! And as always if you have any suggestions for songs, movies, or books let me know!

Happy Holidays! Only 12 days until my favorite day!

Have your cake and eat it too!

Wee! Finals are officially over and my car is packed ready the four-hour drive home that I have in store tomorrow.

With the end of finals means I once again have free-time to do my favorite hobby, which is reading. There is just nothing better than sitting at home snuggled in bed reading a good book. This past summer I picked up Kim Gruenenfeler’s There’s Cake in my Future and I fell in love.

A quick version of the story is that three best friends participate in a ‘cake pull’ where a bride hides charms in a wedding cake and whichever charm you pull predicts your future. Needless to say, I now want to have a cake pull before my eventual wedding and need to find where to get these charms. Of course the bride tries to stage the charms for what she knows her girlfriends need and it gets mixed up in transportation.

It has a little bit of everything from the chick lit world, a best friend could become a boyfriend, a stepmother could turn into a real live mother, and the serial dater may be able to finally settle down. It was a fantastic story and now I’m just not-so-patiently waiting for the sequel to come out.  It was picked up by St. Martin’s Press and I’m dying for them to release it!

So if you have time this winter break, or really whenever, and are craving a good book check this one out! By then maybe the sequel will even appear!

14 days until my favorite holiday!

Study Break!

This weekend is the weekend where QU students find themselves slaving over textbooks to study for finals coming up this week. To take a break from all the studying I put on one of my favorite holiday songs, Britney Spears, ” My Only Wish (This Year)”

The song is so peppy and cute that it has to make you smile, no matter what your relationship status. I was actually inspired to post about this song because of our secret Santa swap last night, we were playing Christmas music while everyone was getting ready and we couldn’t help but belt this song out at the top of our lungs when it came on.

So If you want to listen to something fun to perk up your holiday spirits, try listening to this song. Only 17 days until my favorite Holiday!

By the way Happy Hanukkah too!

Santa can you hear me? I have been so good this year, and all I want is one thing. Tell me my true love is near, he’s all I want just for me underneath my Christmas tree .I’ll be waiting here, Santa that’s my only wish this year.

On a Wednesday…

In a café, I watched it begin again.

My Favorite new song to listen to on Wednesday is Taylor Swift’s “Begin Again”. It is the perfect amount of cute and hopeful that is smile worthy even on the worst of days. On Wednesdays I have an incredibly tough day and I sit in the cafe and now just look around me. It’s like you almost never know where love is beginning, or where love is ending.

Something I love about the song is how happy she sounds in such a safe relationship, “I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny because he never did”. This is the start of a healthy relationship where love isn’t breaking and love is always the best when it’s starting off, or so I’ve heard.

It’s a really soft melody and I love the way she phrases most of her lyrics, she has a knack for the romantics. You know if you’re listening to Taylor you are either really happy, really sad, or really angry. She tends to be on the extreme when it comes to emotions, I really enjoy the calmness of “Begin Again”. Plus, the video is really adorable!

Well, Happy Wednesday Everyone! Only 20 days til my favorite holiday!
