A well kept secret

Because who doesn’t love a good secret? i know that I do, so when I started reading Sophia Kinsella’s Can you keep a secret? I know I had some high hopes  about the book. Not only do I like Kinsella as a writer, but the book happens to the nail on the head with fun and romance. it was my first good read of the summer, and hopefully it won’t be my last.

Emma gets on a plane with the intentions of making it through it, but when it starts to hit some turbulence she starts to go into panic mode. She starts dishing all of her secrets to the handsome gentleman sitting next to her. What this underachieving, newly started marketing agent doesn’t know is that when she shows up to work on Monday she’ll run into him again.

This handsome stranger happens to be the co-owner of the company she is working for. She didn’t just tell him her little secrets she told him the big fat ones, like how she has never been in love. But, wait.. Now he finds out she’s about to marry someone? See the problem?

At first she’s nervous, then she starts to love the nerves and the rest.. well you’ll just have to read to find out.

That also brings me to another one of my new obsessions, www.fortydaysofdating.com . The best experiment I’ve heard of, a girl and a guy who are really good friends decided that they were going to date for 40 days. Right now it is only day 20, but I know exactly what I’ll be doing every day for the next 20 days. So far at day 20 we haven’t hit any physicality, but here’s hoping. I want to know that things like that can actually happen. Leave it to the romantic in me to want to see more develop from it. Right now their dating is really interesting, it is just the two of them seeing each other every day and liking it. Which, seems weird for him but not for her. I love how comfortable it sounds between the two of them. I love being comfortable with someone, I think that is one of the cornerstones of any good relationships, but then again what do I know?

Well, I need to go make dinner or find something new to read.

Love,

Lindsey

Lyrical II

I was driving home from work today, when a song literally stopped me in my tracks. I sat there listening to it, and melting into the lyrics. Melting into every word they said. I’m pretty sure that the guy in the truck next to me at the stoplight thought I was crazy, but I was really feeling it today. It hit me a place so deep, it was just one of those great music moments. The Lumineers really got me good today with Stubborn Love.

She’ll tear a hole in you, the one you can’t repair
But I still love her, I don’t really care

The song comes out guns blazing with this one, she will tear a hole in you. One that you can’t repair. I’ve been feeling a lot of that lately. A hole that swallows you whole, something that makes you toss at night. Something that makes you want to have a really good cry. Yet, you still love them. You still let them rock your world, even if they aren’t worth it.

It’s better to feel pain, than nothing at all
The opposite of love’s indifference
So pay attention now, I’m standing on your porch screaming out
And I won’t leave until you come downstairs

My favorite lines in the entire song, just happen to be it’s better to feel pain, than nothing at all. I would rather have a few great cries, than sit on the sidelines and not care. In the feelings category, I regret nothing.  I may tell people that I care about them, when they don’t care about me and feel rejected, but at least I get it off my chest. At least I feel something. Sometimes I feel a little too much, but I’m lucky. I may not have a happy ending yet, but I will. I will stand at your porch screaming out, may be that will work. Indifference is the worst thing  you can feel about someone.

Keep your head up, my love

Someone said this to me, well not exactly the my love part, the other night. I don’t think he meant it, or anything he said that night. But, hearing that from someone stopped me in my tracks. Probably because the other things he said were pretty powerful, but it started with that.  Keep your head up, it sounds so simple. But, when you are stuck looking at the ground, it sounds pretty great.

I’ll have to say this to leave it off, The Lumineers said it best,”I can’t be told, ah, ah, it can’t be done“. Don’t let anyone tell you that it can’t be done.

I love you better now.

It has been one world-wind lately in my life. From being at school and trying to finish the craziest semester of my life, I finally have a minute to breathe. What do I want to do with my free time? I really felt like blogging. Believe it or not I have missed this part of my life, but free-time just really didn’t exist for me at school.

So naturally when I get back to blogging, I want to talk about something that got me through the semester, music. I listened to a lot of soundtracks and Broadway to get me through the craziness. I won’t talk about that, because it’ll be super boring for most people who don’t get the fun of show-tunes.

Ed Sheeran is a new first love of mine, it wasn’t just the A Team that caught my attention but really his duet with Taylor Swift. Then, I started to get smart and listen to more of his stuff. That being said, Lego House is probably one of my top ten favorite songs of this year.

If you’re broken I will mend you and I’ll keep you sheltered from the storm that’s raging on now

We all want to be mended, and to be sheltered from the storm. We want a hero to save us from the dark corners. We should be able to save ourselves, but it doesn’t always work that way.

I’m out of touch, I’m out of love
I’ll pick you up when you’re getting down
And out of all these things I’ve done I think I love you better now
I’m out of sight, I’m out of mind
I’ll do it all for you in time
And out of all these things I’ve done I think I love you better now

Sometimes the music speaks for itself. Out of all the things I’ve done, I think I love you better now. Some times we think we need to change. We think we need to go somewhere else, to see something else because what is in front of us isn’t good enough. We think that whoever is here, isn’t what we want. Even if we know in our hearts that they are, we try to get out of sight and out of mind so they forget about us. If they forget about us, they make it real easy for us to run away.

We shouldn’t run away, we should learn from all the things we’ve done and love that person better. We should love that person more, because they aren’t anything but themselves. Which, if you think really hard is absolutely perfect in every way.

So if you feel the need to run, hopefully you love someone better after.

Love,

Lindsey

Royally interesting

There are very few things that are easy to do when it is sunny out. All I’ve wanted to is sit outside, but it is next to impossible to see a computer screen outside. I did go for a drive and ended up shopping instead of just getting Starbucks. I’m getting prepared for all the sorority life crafting I know that is coming up in the following weeks. I’m actually really excited to be crafting again, I never thought I’d be any good at it but I do a half decent job.

So since a computer screen is usually off-limits for outside, and shopping well let’s face it can get pretty pricey, the best thing to do outside is grab a towel and a book (maybe some Starbucks) and enjoy the sun! A really great, cheap, small, and entertaining book is Niki Burnham’s Royally Jacked.

This funny teen read is one of those great books that flies by. It’s little size makes it perfect for the beach or for on the go reading. The poor girl has a lot of random things happen to her that cause a situation where her dad moves to some European country to be a chief for a royal family. She decides to go with her dad, because the situation with her mom just wasn’t what Valerie (main character) wanted to deal with at the time.

She then goes on to live my dream life, the family of course has a really cute son her age. It isn’t easy at first, like any relationship ever is, and she struggles with the fact that he’s a real life prince. All bets are off when they meet and it makes Valerie really happy that she took the chance and went with her dad. It also has two sequels, which I was also obsessed with. Who doesn’t love a cute, quick read? I don’t always have time to finish a major novel, but these little books are easy to start and finish!

Simon Pulse does a lot of these cute quick reads, I was really into reading them at one point and am starting to get back into them again. I’m a bit of a bookworm if you can’t already tell.

Well, time for me to go outside and get off this computer! Hopefully you get to do that too!

Spring Fever

It is the magical time of year where the weather finally hits over the 50’s mark and we are good to sit outside. I know that here at Quinnipiac, our quad has looked more like a beach than a University these past few days.

Spring Fever just makes it harder to do anything productive, but being the laser pointer that I am I’ve been pounding the pavement all week. When my mind has had the wonderful opportunity to wander this week I’ve been thinking about happy spring things, for example babies, puppies, and the occasional wedding.

Wedding movies are almost always my favorite.I don’t want my actual wedding to be filled with any of their plot lines, but they are incredibly entertaining to watch. There is something about the “will they? won’t they?” mentality which is enjoyable when it isn’t you. I think there is a little bit of uncertainty in each of us. Each girl out there has this imagine of the person, or knows the person, they think is going to be their husband. When you have this ideal and the seemingly perfect guy comes along, things get well… tricky. You may still be in love with the new guy, but girl in the audience is rooting for the true love of her life.

That’s exactly how I felt the entire time I was watching Patrick Dempsey in Made Of Honor. In the beginning he was the guy I didn’t want to win, I have this thing were the underdog usually isn’t my favorite, but he redeemed himself and made me change my mind. It is a little strange that his best girl friend asks him to be her Maid of Honor. I really would never consider doing that in a million years. That’s why I have girl friends and guy friends. But, nevertheless it’s a fun premise. I used to have a guy friend that could’ve been my Maid of Honor, but I still would’ve chosen against it.

This was way before “McDreamy” met Owen on Grey’s anatomy, but at least on Grey’s they don’t fight for the same girl! Colin is a good-looking prince of sorts, but how can you not love the look in Dempsey’s eyes? It is all in the eyes boys! If you can look at a girl like she’s your world, you win. He does all the tasks, and puts up a pretty valiant fight. I’ll leave it up to you to watch it to find out if he wins the fight.

I say that loosely, there is so much more to do but that is a start. It is a really cute movie, it has its ups and downs for me. It’s a good movie to curl up in bed to on a rainy night like this. I’m pretty sure Scotland is a pretty rainy country, so it really fits into the night.

I’m going to curl up with a movie myself to relax, or figure out who my bridesmaids will be.

I’m going there.

It’s finally time to hit the tween of all tween mother-ships and write about: One Direction.

One Direction happens to be my guilty pleasure, there is just something about the whole boy band thing that brings me back to a time where N’SYNC and Backstreet Boys were the kings of the land and used to make me dance around my playroom for hours on end. Boy bands are just ever 90’s kid jam. If you are a girl from the 90s and you don’t at least appreciate the One Direction phase you had an awful childhood.

My favorite, adorable love song of theirs Little Things. There is not a lyric in the song that doesn’t make me want to curl up in a ball with my stuffed animal and blanket. Can you imagine a boy saying to you they are in love with you and all your little things? Like how you can’t go to bed without a cup of tea, or your voice and your thighs? Ha, if a guy said that to me in a heartfelt way they could marry me tomorrow.

You never love yourself half as much as i love you
You’ll never treat yourself right darling but i want you to
If i let you know, I’m here for you
Maybe you’ll love yourself like i love you oh

My favorite third act twist in the song comes in with the above lines. A guy is supposed to love a girl twice as much as she loves herself. Well, a girl has to love herself to be able to handle a healthy, stable relationship but the guy loving her that much doesn’t hurt the situation. I’ve always said that girls should be treated like princesses, so thank you One Direction for telling the world to treat their girls right. Some things should just be common sense, but as our tour guide in Italy Jose would always say, “Common sense is the least common of the senses”. Our one chaperone loved that quote.

You still have to squeeze into your jeans, but

You’re Perfect to Me.

Hi, all girls listen to that. You are perfect to somebody, and you can squeeze into those jeans all you want. They look fantastic on you! Quinnipiac is doing a confidence week and I’ve really been appreciating it. I found this in the bathroom yesterday and I couldn’t help but smile.

So you should smile, because you are beautiful, and listen to Little Things by One Direction and pretend someone is singing it to you! You deserve it!

I’m back!

After the most insane three weeks of my life, I’m back! Italy was the time of my life, and I would love to go back right about now. I got back and everyone was pulling my hair and pulling me in eight different directions. A week without wifi and a cellphone is great, until you get back and you’re completely overwhelmed. I will figure it all out, and will get through this.

Tonight is a super exciting night, I’m becoming a grand-big and a big all at the same time! My adorable little, who I am so proud of it is getting a little and a twin. I’m so excited, being a big to my little has been so rewarding and watching her grow into such an amazing leader makes me so proud. Sorority stuff may seem lame to some of you, but it was the best decision I ever made.

So speaking of reveal being tonight in the stress of all this, I decided to make red velvet cupcakes (our colors are wine and blue) for afterwards. I hope my new little likes red velvet, if not I have ice cream too. As a big you always have to be thinking! While I was baking I realized how incredibly relaxing it is for me. It is the single thing that distresses me. It just takes me away from all the stress, wear and tears and makes me smile. Plus, I love seeing the finished product or tasting it!

It all made me think of a really cute movie that I love, No Reservations. It is the cutest movie about an aunt who inherits her niece after a tragic car accident who is a professional chief. She is one of the heartless characters who doesn’t have a mothering bone in her body. Not to spoil anything, but you learn to love Kate, aka the gorgeous Catherine Zeta-Jones.

She meets a new chief Nick and things start to heat up in the kitchen. Kate isn’t a romantic, but a good-looking guy with some sparks and things in common could change anyone. It’s a great movie about learning to deal with the situations you are put in, and how to learn to love. Learn to love in more ways than one. Some people just aren’t the most lovey-dovey. I know I can be depending on the subject and situation. Other situations I just don’t understand yet, which is silly and needs to be evaluated.

Abigail Breslin plays the poor little girl who loses her mother, and puts on another spectacular performance. The cast just has big actresses that really do their job well. If you like to cook, or just enjoy a good family movie this is a great one to watch. It’s cute, fun and anyone can watch it. It’s a half decent rom com to curl up with a bowl of pasta and watch!

Happy Eating Readers!

St. Baldricks

I usually hate to blog about song after song after song, but tonight I was inspired.

I went to a St. Baldrick’s event sponsored by our Student Programming Board. For those of you haven’t heard of St. Baldrick’s it’s mission is to help cure children’s cancer. Attendees raise money for children’s cancer leading up to the event. Then, on one big night guys AND girls get up on stage to shave their heads. A kid with cancer will face the challenge of not having hair, what a better way to support them by going through the feat with them. If you want to learn more you, or even donate, check out their website: http://www.stbaldricks.org/history

While in the crowd at this event I saw a Quinnipiac female go up and have her head shaved. It was one of the most moving things I’ve ever seen. I may not know her reasoning, but I do know that is one of the bravest things I’ve ever seen. How incredible is it that a girl shaved all of her hair off to support childhood cancer?

In the shock and awe of it all one song really came to mind, Lee Brice’s “Love Like Crazy”. It’s probably one of my favorite songs out there, with some of the best advice out there.

Be a best friend, tell the truth
And overuse “I love you”
Go to work, do your best
Don’t outsmart your common sense
Never let your prayin’ knees get lazy
And love like crazy

If you ever take one piece of advice from this blog, I’d love it if you could take that message away. Being a best friend is the best gift you can give a person. I know my best friends have made me the person who I am today. They have changed me from a shy, awkward little girl into someone I can be proud of.

Never lie, it is my mom’s biggest pet peeve.

Overuse “I love you”, please do. Tell the people you love that you love them every day, every hour, every minute. You never know when life can change or when tragedy can strike. I’d rather you annoy someone by telling them you love them over and over again than them not knowing exactly how you feel. Love is a small word, but the power of it is impossible to describe.

Do your best, because at the end of the day the only person who has to be proud of you is you. If you do your best than you should feel accomplished and know that you are great just for being you. We can’t be good at everything all the time, but we can push ourselves to do our best and show the world what we’re made of. If we do our best then others will do their best and make the world a better place.

This part is completely selfish, but a guy held the door for me today to go in front of him and I thought it was the most gentlemanly thing ever. Guys do more of that and:

Always treat your woman like a lady
Never get to old to call her baby

If a guy can do that, well they’ve just won any woman’s heart who they want to. Treat a woman like a lady and you will get her whole heart. She’ll never even want to take it back. We value being respected, that’s a fact.

Most importantly readers, Love like Crazy.

Easy A

There are few cult classics for our generation, you know really great movies that create a following. One that will always make me laugh until I cry is Easy A. Emma Stone is pretty much comedic genius when it comes to movies like this, and Penn Badgely makes a nice touch as the boy who she always has had crush on.

It’s amazing how great home can feel, and for the simple reason that I can sit on the couch and watch movies like Easy A in complete comfort.  This movie is one of my best guy friends favorite movie, it may be because Emma Stone is just so pretty ,or because her character Olive has some really brilliant lines. I’m a huge fan of a very classy shower scene they feature where she sings “Pocket Full of Sunshine”.

The funny thing is that this movie features a huge cliché, that no good dead goes unpunished. Olive tries to help a friend out by saying that she was scandalous with him to have people stop talking about him behind his back. The guy brings her a present for helping him about lying about having sex with him and it becomes a huge deal and other guys start to use her new-found popularity to do the same. They give her gift cards, and other various things so they can say she slept with them.

It all starts to bite her in the butt, and isn’t very pleasant when people stop talking about these guys and start talking about her. It really isn’t fair, but she put herself in this position. For all this fake action, no one actually asks her on a date. Not having real dates takes a toll. (I know the feeling) Stanley Tucci plays Olive’s dad. He’s fantastic and her parents make the movie. Stanley Tucci is fantastic in every movie he’s in, so you can’t go wrong with him.

I love the humor, and the clever lines. Whoever wrote this movie was a genius in the teenage girl department. Olive is a high school senior, but it is really relate-able for all girls high school and college alike. Isn’t that the best part of movies? Not only laughing, but seeing the truth through someone else’s eyes. How a director or writer sees the world can really open others eyes to what it’s like to be in high school or whatever the content is.

I won’t spoil the ending, although you might be able to guess what happens. This is a great rainy day movie, or when you are just really in the mood to laugh. My guy friend loving the movie goes to show, guys can like chick flicks too! With that being said I’m going to make my dad watch something along those lines.

Happy Saturday from NJ!

Struggles

The universe just doesn’t want me to go home this weekend. Every time I try to make plans or a time to leave something ridiculous pops up and throws off my plans. No matter what tomorrow I will in my car taking the 3 and a half, hopefully not 4, hour drive across the Connecticut, New York and finally Jersey state lines. Just give me that sign that says “Welcome to the Garden State”. That’s not too much to ask, right?

Naturally, there is only one song on playing on my iphone this afternoon, Michael Buble’s “Home”. It is just the reminder I need that tomorrow is going to come and I will get to cuddle up in my own bed real soon! We each have our kryptonites, one of mine happens to be home, but I have others.

Well I would send them but I know that it’s just not enough
My words were cold and flat
And you deserve more than that

No matter how many times I call or Skype it just doesn’t feel the same as the actual act of being home. It’s a hug, it’s a smile, it’s the fact that your mom makes your favorite dinner just because your coming home. Last semester I went home a lot more than usual, but this semester I just haven’t had time. I’m also going to Italy for spring break instead of going home and relaxing for the week. I know it is going to be the experience of a lifetime, but it doesn’t mean I won’t miss home with all of my heart.

Let me go home
I’m just too far from where you are
I wanna come home

I just really have that ache in my heart to go home, writing about it does help it. I just feel like being surrounding by such amazing people. Give me really good food, and my own bed and I’m set! There are few things I am as passionate about in life as home. It seems silly, but I’m just a family oriented person. Always have been, and probably always will be. They always believe in me, and that’s the best people to have in your life. I’ve gotten more used to being away from home, and it gets easier overtime. Yet, I cry every single time I leave. It just happens because there is nothing better than Mays Landing, NJ with all of my family and my parents and the whole crew.

I really wish my friends from home were going home this weekend too, but I know they are super busy people. I’ll be really excited to see them in three/four weeks when we’re all home for Easter. Just a few more  hours, a little bit of packing and I’ll be there!

For the record, Dr. Suesses Birthday is tomorrow!
